Lothian Island Wildlife Sanctuary is a small island of 38 square kilometres. famous for its views at sunset. The sanctuary harbours wild boar, spotted deer. estuarine crocodile and Gangetic dolphin, apart from various bird species. It is especially good for observing the mangrove plantation from a close distance, as one can walk amid mangrove trees without the fear of tigers. In most other parts of the Sunderbans a visitor cannot walk in the mangrove plantation due to the extremely aggressive behaviour of tigers.
The sanctuary can be reached via Namkhana; a permit can be obtained from the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, 24 Parganas (South) Division, Alipore, Kolkata, or from Namkhana Range Office.
