This island under sundarbans tiger reserve (STR) covering an area of 362.4 sq.km was declared as wildlife sanctuary in the year 1976. Sajnekhali can be apprroched from port canning or basanti by motor launch or motor boat. Sajnekhali is the gateway to the buffer and core zone of sundarban biosphere reserve (SBR). Numerous varieties of bird species are seen during the post monsoonal period in sajnekhali bird sanctuary. There is a mangrove interpretation center alongwith a mangrove museum. The tourism development corporation of westbengal Government runs an attractive tourist lodge for the sundarbans Visitors. Besides, there exists a zilla parishad bunglow at pakhirala just opposite to sajnekhali after crossing Gumdi river. Sundarbans project tiger has constructed three watch towers which are used by the tourists for tiger watching , deer Watching and Bird watching respectively and thus, watch towers fulfil the purpose to sight wildlife under protected environment.
